Malcolm Shabazz’s Suspicious Death

by Stephen Lendman

On May 9, Amsterdam News (AN) headlined “Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X, killed.”

AN said he was killed in Tijuana, Mexico. Unconfirmed reports said “he died early Thursday morning, May 9, 2013, from injuries sustained after he was thrown off a building or shot as he was being robbed.”

Family members acknowledged his death. They haven’t confirmed where or how.

Talking Points Memo (TPM) said it “independently confirmed his death through a (non-family) source with close knowledge of the situation.” It said he “was beaten during a robbery Wednesday night in Mexico City.”

A State Department source said:

“We are aware of the death of a US citizen in Mexico City. We have been in contact with family members, and at their request we have no further comment at this time.”

Shabazz was Malcolm X’s grandson. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm was killed as he was about to speak in Manhattan. In his autobiography, he commented on his possible death, saying:

“Every morning when I wake now, I regard it as a having another borrowed day.”

“In any city, wherever I go, making speeches, holding meetings of my organisation, or attending to other business, black men are watching every move I make, awaiting their chance to kill me, I have said publicly many times that I know that they have their orders.”

“Anyone who chooses not to believe what I am saying doesn’t know the Muslims in the Nation of Islam.”

“I know, too, that I could suddenly die at the hands of some white racists. Or I could die at the hands of some Negro hired by the white man.”

“Or it could be some brainwashed Negro acting on his own idea that by eliminating me, he would be helping out the white man because I talk about the white man the way I do.”

Who killed Malcolm matters less than who wanted him dead and ordered it. Others will have to decide. Perhaps history will have final say.

The same holds for Shabazz. It’s unclear who killed him and why. He once said he and his family were persecuted “by select businessmen and government officials. I’ve been a target my entire life. My family is targeted.” More on that below.

On February 4, Press TV headlined “FBI arrests Malcolm X grandson en route to Iran,” saying:

He was scheduled to participate in a Tehran Hollywoodism conference. At the time, the FBI “refused to provide any information about his whereabouts.”

US media scoundrels reported nothing. This writer also participated in the conference via Skype from Chicago. Perhaps it was wise choice. At a time of increasing tyranny, Washington critics have good reason to fear.

Press TV published a statement Shabazz posted on Cynthia McKinney’s Facebook page. In part it said:

“I sincerely appreciate the care & concern of the People over my well-being after Press TV’s report of the most recent events which have transpired regarding the FBI’s harassment of me.”

“Given the storm of lies, and half-truths that come with being associated with.Minister Malcolm.I will take this opportunity to properly & fully disclose what transpired.”

“In the beginning of 2012, I had been informed that I was under investigation by the FBI’s Counter Terrorism Task Force Unit located in Goshen, NY.”

“The agents of this division-and in collaboration with others-have visited several residences of which I was known by them to frequent.”

They told “surrounding residents to observe the house and to notify them if they saw me.”

“These are the homes of long-time friends, and very close supporters. Yet, when federal agents begin knocking on someone’s door on multiple occasions to snoop, and ask questions, whether one is guilty of an offense or not, it’s enough to coerce people into distancing themselves from you.”

“This cheap tactic employed by the FBI is a means of agitation & harassment. They seek to neutralize my networking abilities.

They have visited locations in California, Chicago, Miami and most aggressively in New York.”

“People were advising me that if I had nothing to hide, then I should just contact them as requested and cooperate. Though I must say that in these kind of matters I am of a particular ethic.”

For one, I have been engaged in no criminal activity of their concern, and they could have located me if they so chose. Secondly, I don’t recognize the authority in them beckoning me.”

“It wasn’t even until my mother informed me that they had been contacting her that I truly became agitated.”

“She advised me to see what they had to say, and so I obliged the next time they came around looking for me. My encounter was with 2 federal agents of Goshen, NY’s Counter Terrorism Task Force Unit. The primary agent identified himself as Special Agent Tom Brozicky.”

“They expressed concern” in his “international travels.”

“I have lived & studied in Damascus, Syria for over a year, and now the US is instigating conflict within the very same region.”

“I went on ex-congresswoman/former presidential candidate Cynthia Mckinney’s delegation along with Dr. Randy Short to Libya, and met with Leader Muammar Gadhafi one week prior to NATO intervention, and I was most recently getting ready to travel to Tehran, Iran to be a participant of the International Fajr Film Festival and give a lecture addressing the issues of Hollywood and violence.”

“I was picked up by authorities after I filed for a visa to Iran, and 2 days prior to my departure. A detective squad from the City of Middletown Police Department surrounded me in the street about 2 blocks from where I was residing.”

“When I was brought before a Judge of City of Middletown court, I was surprised to be informed that I was being charged with Grand Larceny, and False Impersonation charge.”

“Then I was sent to jail, and told to appear again 7 days later. Then following court date, the bogus charge of Grand Larceny, which they only put to justify stopping me in first place, was dropped.”

“And they left me to face the False Impersonation. I was offered 90 days for the offense of giving the authorities the wrong name which I declined before bailing out after 2 weeks.”

“When I was being held within the belly of the beast on trumped up charges, to my rescue came the journalist at Press TV based in Iran.”

“The formula for a public assassination is: the character assassination before the physical assassination; so one has to be made killable before the eyes of the public in order for their eventual murder to then (be) deemed justifiable.”

“And when the time arrives for these hits to be carried out, you’re not going to see a CIA agent with a suit & tie, and a badge that says ‘CIA’ ”

“What they will do is to out-source to local police departments in the region of their target, and to employ those that look like the target of interest to infiltrate the workings in order to set up the environment for the eventual assassination (character, physical/incarceration, exile) to take place.”

For several months prior to my arrest in late January, 2013, I faced a pattern of harassment from law enforcement which is usually reserved for important figures.”

“With that being said, I was not arrested by federal agents. I was taken in by a squad from the City of Middletown, NY’s Police Department.”

“I was held in the Orange County Jail in Goshen, NY. However, from the time that I was booked at the precinct, to standing before a Judge the next day who told me to come back in 7 more, to being processed at the Orange County Jail and up until 7 days later, I was not permitted to make any calls to notify anyone of my status; as though I had just been kidnapped from the street.”

Unfortunately, until this day, my family hasn’t been fully abreast of my situation as I haven’t had the opportunity to properly consult with any of them.”

Given Shabazz’s lineage and activism, he had good reason to fear. Details surrounding his death remain sketchy and suspicious.

Robberies seldom involve deaths. They rarely, if ever, occur atop buildings. Seldom is anyone thrown off one. It’s unknown if any of this is true. It’s unclear where Shabbaz died.

Activists like him are vulnerable. The FBI’s COINTELPRO waged war on dissent.

It was conducted against alleged communists, political dissidents, anti-war activists, human and civil rights supporters, and organizations for ethnic justice and racial emancipation, as well as for economic, social, and political equality across gender and color lines.

In their book “Agents of Repression,” Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall said:

COINTELPRO “came to signify the whole context of clandestine (often illegal) political repression activities (including) a massive surveillance (program via) wiretaps, surreptitious entries and burglaries, electronic devices, live ‘tails’ and….bogus mail.”

It was done to induce paranoia and “foster ‘splits’ within or between organizations.”

Other tactics included:

  • “black propaganda” through leaflets or other publications; they were “designed to discredit organizations and foster internal tensions;”

  • “disinformation or ‘gray propaganda;’ “

  • “bad-jacketing” to “creat(e) suspicion – through the spread of rumors, manufacture of evidence, etc. – that bona fide organizational members, (were) FBI/police informants;” it was done to turn some members against others violently;

  • “assassinations (of) selected political leaders;” and

  • “harassment arrests (on bogus) charges.”

COINTELPRO never ended. It was reinvented earlier. It’s now part of America’s “war on terror.” No one’s safe anywhere. US citizens are vulnerable at home or abroad.

It’s official Obama policy. He appointed himself judge, jury and executioner. He governs by diktat authority. Doing so affords justice to no one ordered killed.

Summary judgment means no arrests, no Miranda rights, no due process or habeas rights, and no trials. Diktats decide who lives or dies.

Anyone called Al Qaeda or accused of terrorist connections gets marked for death. Activists challenging imperial lawlessness are vulnerable.

Eliminating America’s enemies alone matters. Methods include drones, death squads, targeted assassinations and other means.

Counterterrorism is cover for wholesale or retail killing. Whether Shabbaz was an imperial victim isn’t known. His death remains suspicious. Challenging imperial lawlessness is risky. It’s price sometimes is death.

Lynne Stewart in Grave Danger! Compassionate Release Petition and Dick Gregory fast‏

PETITION TO FREE LYNNE STEWART: SAVE HER LIFE – RELEASE HER NOW!   Lynne Stewart has devoted her life to the oppressed – a constant advocate for the countless many deprived in the United States of their freedom and their rights.   Unjustly charged and convicted for the “crime” of providing her client with a fearless defense, the prosecution of Lynne Stewart is an assault upon the basic freedoms of us all.   After years of post-conviction freedom, her bail was revoked arbitrarily and her imprisonment ordered, precluding surgery she had scheduled in a major New York hospital.   The sinister meaning of the relentless persecution of Lynne Stewart is unmistakably clear. Given her age and precarious health, the ten-year sentence she is serving is a virtual death sentence.   Since her imprisonment in the Federal Prison in Carswell, Texas her urgent need for surgery was delayed 18 months – so long, that the operating physician pronounced the condition as “the worst he had seen.”   Now, breast cancer, which had been in remission prior to her imprisonment, has reached Stage Four. It has appeared in her lymph nodes, on her shoulder, in her bones and her lungs.   Her daughter, a physician, has sounded the alarm: “Under the best of circumstances, Lynne would be in a battle of the most serious consequences with dangerous odds. With cancer and cancer treatment, the complications can be as debilitating and as dangerous as the cancer itself.”   In her current setting, where trips to physicians involve attempting to walk with 10 pounds of shackles on her wrists and ankles, with connecting chains, Lynne Stewart has lacked ready access to physicians and specialists under conditions compatible with medical success.   It can take weeks to see a medical provider in prison conditions. It can take weeks to report physical changes and learn the results of treatment; and when held in the hospital, Lynne has been shackled wrist and ankle to the bed.   This medieval “shackling” has little to do with any appropriate prison control. She is obviously not an escape risk.   We demand abolition of this practice for all prisoners, let alone those facing surgery and the urgent necessity of care and recovery.   It amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, in violation of human rights.   There is immediate remedy available for Lynne Stewart. Under the 1984 Sentencing Act, after a prisoner request, the Bureau of Prisons can file a motion with the Court to reduce sentences “for extraordinary and compelling reasons.” Life threatening illness is foremost among these and Lynne Stewart meets every rational and humane criterion for compassionate release.   To misconstrue the gravamen of this compassionate release by conditioning such upon being at death’s door – released, if at all, solely to die – is a cruel mockery converting a prison sentence, wholly undeserved, into a death sentence.   The New York Times, in an editorial (2/12), has excoriated the Bureau of Prisons for their restrictive crippling of this program. In a 20-year period, the Bureau released a scant 492 persons – an average of 24 a year out of a population that exceeds 220,000.   We cry out against the bureaucratic murder of Lynne Stewart.   We demand Lynne Stewart’s immediate release to receive urgent medical care in a supportive environment indispensable to the prospect of her survival and call upon the Bureau of Prisons to act immediately.   If Lynne’s original sentence of 28 months had not been unreasonably, punitively increased to 10 years, she would be home now — where her medical care would be by her choice and where those who love her best would care for her. Her isolation from this loving care would end.   Prevent this cruelty to Lynne Stewart whose lifelong commitment to justice is now a struggle for her life.   Free Lynne Stewart Now!   Ralph Poynter and Family

Press Release Contact: Ralph Schoenman, 707.552.9992 Lil Gregory, 508.746.7427   DICK GREGORY TO FAST UNTIL IMPRISONED ATTORNEY LYNNE STEWART IS FREED   Dick Gregory issued a declaration today, on the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., that “I shall refuse all solid food until Lynne Stewart is freed and receives medical treatment in the care of her family and with physicians of her choice without which she will die.”   The 73-year-old Stewart, a renowned criminal defense attorney, is suffering from Stage 4 cancer. Gregory, known for his social activism as much as his for comedic wit and political commentary, has taken this step to reinforce the worldwide petition in support of Stewart’s application for compassionate release. Over 6,000 people, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Pete Seeger, have signed to date with the numbers growing by the minute.

As a criminal defense lawyer for over 30 years, Lynne Stewart defended the poor, the disadvantaged and those targeted by the police and the State. Such has been her reputation that judges assigned her routinely to act for defendants whom no attorney was willing to represent. One of these was the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who Stewart represented with co-counsels former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and Abdeen Jabara.   In 2002, Lynne Stewart was targeted by then-President George Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft for providing a vigorous defense of her client. She was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist activity after she exercised both her and her client’s first amendment rights by presenting a press release to a Reuters journalist. In 2006, while the Department of Justice demanded a 30-year sentence, Judge John Koetl, handed down a 28-month sentence noting: “By providing a criminal defense to the poor, the disadvantaged and unpopular over three decades, it is no exaggeration to say that Ms. Stewart performed a public service not only to her clients but to the nation.”   That sentence, however, was not to stand as the Second Circuit Appellate Court, withdrew Lynne Stewart’s bail — even though her case is still before the courts — and remanded the case back to Judge Koetl with the harsh demand that he revisit his sentence and issue a severely enhanced one. On July 15, 2010, Judge Koeltl increased Stewart’s sentence from 28 months to 10 years imprisonment. This has become a virtual death sentence for Lynne Stewart.   As Gregory so eloquently states:  “The reason for the prosecution and persecution of Lynne Stewart is evident to us all. It was designed to intimidate the entire legal community so that few would dare to defend political clients whom the State demonizes and none would provide a vigorous defense. It also was designed to narrow the meaning of our cherished first amendment right to free speech, which the people of this country struggled to have added to the Constitution as the Bill of Rights.”

###   DECLARATION BY DICK GREGORY — APRIL 4, 2013   I hereby declare on this day commemorating the life and sacrifice of my friend and brother in struggle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that in the spirit of his moral legacy, I demand the immediate release from prison of the legendary lawyer Lynne Stewart, who devoted her entire professional life to the poor, the oppressed and those targeted by the police and a vindictive State.   I further declare that from this day forth, I shall refuse all solid food until Lynne Stewart is freed and receives medical treatment in the care of her family and with physicians of her choice without which she will die.   There is no time to lose as cancer, which had been in remission, has metastasized since her imprisonment. It has spread to her lymph nodes, her shoulder and appears in her bones and in her lungs.   A criminal defense attorney in New York for over 30 years, Lynne Stewart’s unwavering dedication as a selfless advocate was acknowledged by the community as well as judges, prosecutors and the entire legal profession. Such has been her reputation as a fearless lawyer, ready to challenge those in power, that judges assigned her routinely to act for defendants whom no attorney was willing to represent.   In 2002, Lynne Stewart was targeted by then-President George Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft for providing a vigorous defense of her client, the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman.

She was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist activity after she exercised both her and her client’s first amendment rights by presenting a press release to a Reuters journalist. She did nothing more than other attorneys, such as her co-counsel former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, have done on behalf of their clients.   The reason for the prosecution and persecution of Lynne Stewart is evident to us all. It was designed to intimidate the entire legal community so that few would dare to defend political clients whom the State demonizes and none would provide a vigorous defense. It also was designed to narrow the meaning of our cherished first amendment right to free speech, which the people of this country struggled to have added to the Constitution as the Bill of Rights.   The prosecution and imprisonment of Lynne Stewart is an ominous threat to the freedom, rights and dignity of each and every American. It is the agenda of a police state.   I ask you to join with me to demand freedom for Lynne Stewart. An international campaign has been launched with a petition that supports her application for compassionate release. Under the 1984 Sentencing Act, the Bureau of Prisons can file a motion with the Court to reduce sentences “for extraordinary and compelling reasons.” Life threatening illness is foremost among these and Lynne Stewart meets every rational and humane criterion for compassionate release.   Join with me, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Pete Seeger and 6,000 other people of conscience throughout the world who have signed this petition to compel the Warden of the Federal Medical Center, Carswell and the Director of the Bureau of Prisons to act. Act now. There is no time to lose.

Obama Wants Lynne Stewart Dead

by Stephen Lendman

Lynne’s 73. She’s gravely ill.

Obama killed Chavez. He wants Lynne dead. Unjustifiable longterm imprisonment assures it.

She’s a breast cancer survivor. It reemerged. It’s spreading.

She’s dying. Vital life-saving treatment is delayed or denied. Expert private care can save her. She needs it now.

This alert supplements a circulating petition. It repeats information in it.

It’s urgent!

Sign it!

Circulate it!

Tell others!

Tell them to do the same!

Save Lynne!

Demand justice!

Free her!

Save her life!

Release her now!

Do it today!

Vital surgery was delayed 18 months. It was done to kill her.

Lynne’s operating physician called her condition “the worst he had seen.”

Breast cancer reached Stage Four. Cancer Treatment Centers of America says multiple body parts are affected. Areas may include bones, brain, lungs, liver, and/or elsewhere.

Lynne’s disease affects her lymph nodes, shoulder, bones and lungs.

It’s treatable. Women diagnosed with Stage Four can live many years. Key is getting effective treatment on time. Immediate care is essential.

Lynne’s daughter practices medicine. She said:

“Under the best of circumstances, Lynne would be in a battle of the most serious consequences with dangerous odds.”

“With cancer and cancer treatment, the complications can be as debilitating and as dangerous as the cancer itself.”

Federal Medical Center, Carswell, TX provides deplorable care. Treatment involves shackling. Ten pounds bind Lynne’s wrists and ankles. Chains connect them.

Weeks pass to see providers. Results take weeks longer. Hospital conditions are shocking. They include shackling wrists and ankles painfully to beds. It’s standard practice. It’s brutal. It’s medieval.

It’s cruel and unusual punishment. It violates constitutional rights. It’s unprincipled and unconscionable.

Patients like Lynne aren’t flight risks. They deserve better.

America’s 1984 Sentencing Act grants prisoner rights. They include reduced sentences “for extraordinary and compelling reasons.”

None rise to the level of life threatening illness. Lynne deserves compassionate release. Delay assures death.

DON’T LET OBAMA GET AWAY WITH IT!!

FREE LYNNE NOW!!

She worked tirelessly for justice. She’s a role model for what’s right. She deserves compassion in her time of need. She deserves that and more.

Event: Stop School Closings in Chocolate City

An Attack on Education is an Attack on the Black Community

Africans in the United States have a long history of resistance to encroachment and meddling within the indispensable aspect of education.

Those who have sought to control the minds, labor and overall communities of American born Africans, have known quite well how vital it is that they manipulate as many aspects of their educational systems as possible.

Enslaved Africans were forbidden from reading or writing—often punishable by death or inhumane physical abuse. Slave masters and white society, in general, very well knew that by limiting Africans access to education (writing and reading), they, in turn, limited the overall prospects of empowerment and liberation of Africans.

However, Africans found inventive ways to gain an education even in these most oppressive situations. They employed secret systems of socialized education whereby if one gained an education, the information learned could be taught to others.

As a result, underground schools were established by Africans which led to higher literacy amongst the enslaved populations and prior to Brown v. Board of Education there were approximately 146 black/African boarding schools.

Today there are four. Despite the mainly superficial gains of the historic 1954 ruling that desegregated this country’s public school system; institutionally racist attacks on African youth subsist.

Africans lost complete control over the educating of their most valuable resource—their youth.

One of the most prominent weapons used against black and brown youth is that of the Charter School scheme—the corporatizing of public education.

Despite evidence showing that Traditional Public Schools frequently outperform Charter Schools (Stanford University’s CREDO Report) the corporate media and untruthful politicians continue their false propaganda crusade, in an effort to further privatize public schools in communities of color.

African communities within The District of Columbia continue to face an onslaught of attacks on their public schools which is essentially a continuation of the attack on African education.

School closures, privatization of public schools, and tracking for the nefarious school to prison pipeline are some of the significant reasons the DC chapter of the Black is Back Coalition (BIBC) is actively organizing to put a halt to these vicious attacks, starting with the 2013 slated school closings. BIBC is unequivocally committed to this issue.

BIBC has never bought into the false propaganda often promoted by disingenuous white liberals, and conservatives, alike. We understand the catastrophic impact that institutional racism has, and continues to have on African communities.

In 2013 the United States’ public educational system is just as racially segregated as it was when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. However this re-segregation has left public schools within African communities in the hands of non-African entities.

This despicable plan has set African communities up for targeted attacks and manipulation. BIBC aims to work with DC’s African communities in an effort to gain greater African control of our schools, our communities and, thus, our collective destinies.

On February 28, 2013 at 7 PM The Black is Back Coalition DC will be hosting a vastly important community town hall forum addressing the slated 2013 school closures.

This forum will be on the campus of Howard University in the Blackburn Center Digital Auditorium.

We are inviting all concerned community members to attend this forum in an effort to strategize and organize around this vital issue.

We must prevent the closing of these schools, as they would have myriad negative effects on students, as well as their families.

DC’s government officials, including DC Public School Chancellor Kaya Henderson, continue to show no respect or regard for the youth in these communities and the negative impact the school closings would have on their families.

BIBC cares about DC’s African community, which is why we are actively organizing to help stop these closures, as well as to prevent the charter school from metastasizing further within DC.

We invite you to join us February 28, 2013 at 7 PM to learn more about the Black is Back Coalition DC, the work we are doing, and how you can get involved to help stop the attacks on public education in African communities.

Institutional Racism & White Supremacy: They Kill Innocent Children Too

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/your-world-news/2013/01/09/national-radio-forum-on-institutional-racism-imperialism

Understandably, in light of the horrific tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, many have called for a nation dialogue regarding the United States’ lax gun laws. The president has even called for a task force to address gun violence —-all brought on by the terrible tragedy in Newtown. However, we do not see these kinds of actions put forth when it comes to the senseless and horrific killings of people of color, whether they are mass killings or otherwise. It should be blatantly evident that the death of people of color is not weighed the same when contrasted to that of white people.

During the summer of 2012 the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement put out a report that highlighted that (at least) every 36 hours a black person in the US is extra-judiciously murdered by police, security guards or self-appointed law enforcement. Despite this human rights issue, no corporate media outlet picked up the story and there was no statement from Barack Obama and his administration. And there was no national mourning when a 7-year old black girl from Detroit was murdered, while she slept on her family’s couch, by the police. Her name was Aiyana Mo’Nay Stanley Jones. The corporate media, along with most of the US’s elected officials, based on their inaction, could not give a damn. No matter how many black children are killed because of gun related violence “mainstream” America remains callously silent with indifference—especially when they are murdered by state sponsored police.

And when the US’s military destroys innocent civilians (including children), there are no tears shed by the president or corporate media talking heads. Since 2005 the Bush and Obama administration is responsible for at least 178 drone related murders of children in Pakistan, alone. Certainly no mourning from Obama, regarding those murders—after all he orchestrated many of them.  This all happens under the direction of institutional racism, white supremacy and US foreign and domestic policy. Because of the aforementioned issues, we at Your World News will be hosting a national forum on our radio show this coming January 8th at 7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. We are inviting the public to call in with their personal stories regarding institutional racism in America, as well as with their solutions oriented ideas. We want this radio based forum to serve as a platform to launch in to a national task force addressing these issues, led by the people and progressive grassroots organizations. We, as an engaged community, cannot afford to idly sit by while innocent people are being murdered whole sale. We must speak out, organize and demand an end to all forms institutional racism and injustice, which includes police brutality and imperialism.

We must work collectively. However, we must create a national dialogue that raises the specter of consciousness regarding these issues and their root causes. This show, we hope, will serve as an important first step. Please tune in to the important show on Tuesday January 8th at 7 PM Eastern Standard Time simply by clicking on this link:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/your-world-news/2013/01/09/national-radio-forum-on-institutional-racism-imperialism

The call-in number will be: 347-945-5191.

Let’s work together to put an end these crimes against humanity.

Marshall “Eddie” Conway: Why We Must Save A Friend of a Friend

The Friend of a Friend (FOF) program was started by a group of concerned men at the Maryland Correctional Training Center and the staff of the American Friends Service Committee in 2006. Several of us men had come together to address the violence between various street organizations and because of we were concerned about the increasingly young prison population. I had worked with the American Friends Service Committee for several years prior to the closure of the Maryland House of Corrections, and knew they were willing to continue their work with prisoners. Collectively we created the foundation for what would eventually become a system-wide program serving five Maryland prisons.

Over the years the FOF has worked with several hundred prisoners and reached thousands of other prisoners through our outreach programs that include theater productions and guest lecturers from Howard University and Morgan State University. FOF has earned the respect of the Maryland prison population by setting a positive example for others to follow. The real impact of the program is that it has saved many prisoners from engaging in conflicts that could have led to the loss of life and/or additional time spent in prison. Saving lives is the most important task of the FOF program, and members incorporate methods that help younger prisoners gain the skills to negotiate the prison environment and the community beyond the walls.

FOF has been successful at bringing prisoners together from all walks of life; many of whom have differing philosophical and/or political ideologies. This is unique in the prison environment where people tend to segregate according to their specific political, religious or gang/street organization affiliation. Coming together like this allows us to get to know one another and bond during the weekly sessions. This is important because it allows prisoners from these backgrounds to get to know each other, and these relationships allow the FOF to negotiate disputes between members of these different groups. This leads to dialogue rather than violent conflict, and many of these prisoners return to the outside community and work with children and youth, and organizations such as AFSC. There is a broader sense of community and camaraderie among prisoners because the program exists throughout the system.

In this program we help prisoners, (78% are of African descent in the system in Maryland) understand their culture and history as well as their individual impact on their community. They are encouraged to accept responsibility and to create change in those communities. I believe for these reasons alone it is viewed by some Public Safety officials as a threat to the growth of the Prison Industrial Complex. While prison officials claim to have the best interest of the community at heart, their real interest is in their paychecks and positions of power. Programs like FOF break the cycle of re-incarceration and help prisoners to successfully re-enter the community. While FOF has worked to increase the peace in the prison system and the community beyond, other forces have continually attacked the program and worked to prevent unity among prisoners. Now, once again we have to defend our program from these attempts to get rid of it, and we need the help of everyone concerned with peace and justice so that we might keep up this work that has benefitted so many people. WE MUST SAVE A FRIEND OF A FRIEND!

THE PAN-AFRICAN COLLECTIVE FOR ADVOCACY & ACTION

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/your-world-news/2012/10/26/what-is-the-pan-african-collective-for-advocacy-action

The legacy of African self-empowerment, development, and resistance to injustice is one that is not only long, it is rich. Africans also have a strong history when it comes to collectiveness via Pan-Africanism. Examples of this cooperativeness are evident within organizations such as: the Pan-African Congress, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Council on African Affairs and many others. Africans, worldwide, came together for the betterment of Africans, not only on the continent—-but throughout the Diaspora. They stood tall in the face of societal maladies such as colonization, white supremacy, imperialism and institutional racism.  These organizations collective efforts paved the way for progress that was made, as well as further steps towards the eventual goals of liberation, justice, and equality (to name a few). Those organizations have given today’s Africans solid examples to build upon.

In the 21st Century the struggle for African liberation, social justice, and equality remain vastly important. The African continent is under attack from Western aggression and neo-colonization. Countries like the United States, along with their European partners, scramble for Mother Africa’s endless array of minerals and vast landscape. As Western states continue to profit from Africa’s resources, hundreds of millions of native Africans suffer without fully benefiting from these same resources, including land.

Throughout the African Diaspora Africans find themselves struggling with similar forces as their continental brothers and sisters. In the US, for instance, American born Africans continue to struggle and fight the devastating impact of institutional racism, white supremacy and capitalism. These nefarious triplets have produced the likes of a Prison Industry Complex (modern day slavery), a deadly police state, economic inequity, and apartheid-like conditions. And Africans in places like Colombia continue to fight to stay on their land and for equal rights. The struggle for African liberation is far from over.

In 2012 a new African organization, geared towards tackling a range of issues, was formed. The Pan-African Collective for Advocacy & Action (PACAA) was created in August 2012 by a collection of Africans committed to making a positive impact within the aforementioned struggle for justice, liberation, and equality. This organization is also aimed at showcasing, supporting, and developing existing African achievements and models. The PACAA has a focus on the Arts & Culture, Economic, Social Justice, Continental Affairs, Media, Scholarship and Youth Outreach. PACAA’s media wing (Your World News), will allow issues within the African Diaspora to be broadcast and documented. Our Think Tank component will be geared towards writing and developing a range of policy driven white papers which will ultimately be released to the public.

The PACAA is African driven, however we are also internationalist. We welcome collaboration with our organizations, individuals and nations with similar political ideologies and focus. More information on the Pan-African Collective for Advocacy & Action can be found at: www.thepacaa.org. For media inquiries please email: pacaa@thepacaa.org.

When Will Radical Become the Norm?

When Will Radical Become the Norm?

By Solomon Comissiong

Institutional Racism, war, white supremacist values, prison and military industrial complexes, sexism, and police brutality are all routine aspects of American society. These are norms that far too many Americans have come to accept as just that—norms. Xenophobia, plutocracy, and a society that places profits well before the interests of human beings are also spot-on descriptors of America. Although some Americans may see these things as bad elements within any society, far too many have accepted them within their own.

American Exceptionalism is a mental illness predicated on the delusional idea that America is the “gold standard” for the rest of the world to follow, regardless of the category. The American Exceptionalism myth has well prepared countless Americans to overlook their country’s numerous flaws—-seeing them, in some warped way, as positive traits. This destructive way of thinking affects Americans from all walks of life and political persuasions. Even the so-called American “progressive”, sadly, believes that they represent some kind of socially liberal fresh air needed to improve society. Unfortunately, these neo-progressives’ ideas are limited just like the imaginary world they, too, enjoy residing within. The limited “changes” they are willing to address essentially sustain the overall status quo. And those whose ideas are actually constructive and could improve humanity, if collectively fought for—are labeled as “radical”. This labeling of many sensible minded individuals plays a significant role in obfuscating people who would make excellent social justice fighters, if only they weren’t so mentally programmed. They have been trained to associate the word “radical” with something that is automatically negative or impractical, without ever examining the ideas of those labeled “radical”. This way of thinking is no accident; it is as planned as America’s electoral politics.

Many American minds have been carefully crafted within laboratories otherwise known as public schools and university classrooms. They have been indoctrinated to buy in to ideas that are inhumane in nature and extoll people who were barbaric. Naturally when presented with ideas, systems and individuals antithetical to “The American Way“, they are seen as “bad”, “wrong”, or, yes, even “radical”. Those that speak out against the US’s insatiable appetite for war and destruction are conveniently characterized as “radicals” or even social deviants. Those who believe these narratives are unaware that their minds are trapped within an alternate reality where up is down and down is up. They are sadly programmed to eschew things that are rooted in humanity not realizing how they have lost their own since of morality. If more Americans could escape this alternate, yet nefarious, mental prison, they would start to comprehend how they have been cleverly trained to fight against their own human interests.

Far too many Americans dwell within a constant state of government sponsored consternation. Americans have been duped in to believing that “socialism” is actually something evil lurking on the precipice of their so-called society—-waiting to pounce upon their so-called “freedoms”. Many foolishly fail to realize that a more socialist society would bring them, and their loved ones, things like a true universal healthcare system, free or extremely low cost tertiary education, and affordable housing for all, to name just a few (of the many) benefits of life within a truly socialist society. Instead of embracing positive aspects of a more socialist society Americans blissfully suffer within a society predicated on  rugged exploitation.

Americans embrace capitalism while at the same time, a great many, fail to truly understand this unforgiving economic system. If most fail to understand capitalism, it should be of no surprise that even more lack any understanding of socialism—they have been well trained not to. Americans eat whatever psychological poison is fed to them by the corporate media and government alike. American citizens have methodically been taught to believe they reside within the world’s most free and open “democratic society. They have heard these lies hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times. Those devoid of critical thinking skills quickly believe false narratives if they are repeated enough times. This strict, yet implicit, propaganda is virtually ubiquitous, which makes it all the more effective. Training the American mind to believe that the US is a “gold standard” for all other societies to mimic also trains the same mind not to ask for things that should be seen as human rights. This is why, despite the fact that over 40,000 Americans die each year simply because they lack health insurance, a socialized healthcare system is seen as an “entitlement” that would break the US federal budget. And those who press for a single-payer socialized healthcare system are deemed “radical”. Those advocating for things like socialized healthcare and free tertiary education are “radical” evil socialists who want to eviscerate Americans’ so-called “liberties”.

The socially engineered American mind does not see the spending of a trillion dollars a year on military as something that breaks the budget or robs them of their opportunity to obtain quality healthcare for all. Somehow it is justified to spend over a trillion dollars a year on things like imperialist wars, which ultimately murder countless innocent civilians, from other countries. This is not considered a radically evil action put in place by radically evil politicians.

The two-headed corporate party dictatorship (Democrats & Republicans) recently held their political conventions in Tampa Bay, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina, respectively. For those who have somehow found a way to break away from the American system of indoctrination it was a most depressing sight. It was a human sea of sheep-like people who have bought in to the hypnotic political rhetoric fed to them. It mattered not that the political food they were swallowing was filled with empty calories, and much like eating a box of doughnuts, it was superficially “sweet” yet devoid of substance—-and ultimately harmful. Most of the convention goers were going there to willingly be led by their political shepherds. These people, like many Democrats and Republicans, have been trained to base political merit on fancy conventions replete with amoral politicians and their well-crafted speeches. It matters little whether the speeches are hollow and ultimately baseless. Much of the American voting populace are attracted to shiny trinkets that distract them from tangible actions necessary toward building a much better society. For instance, every four years since 2000, the Democrats roll out their political Godfather, Bill Clinton, to use his forked tongue as a tool to galvanize an already sycophantic base of voters/zombies.

These folks are ready and willing to vote for whomever the Democratic Party places in from of them, just like their Republican counterparts, regardless of what they say. Facts anchored to their destructive policies matter little—-they often refuse see their political masters’ polices as destructive. They have, in essence, been trained to look no further than the shiny surface. This is why politicians like Bill Clinton and his buddy, Barack Obama, can say whatever they like, to tens of millions of their “supporters”. Watching Democratic convention-goers while Clinton and Obama gave their speeches was similar to witnessing members of a cult as they attentively hang on to every word spit forth by their leader. And for this African/black author, it was especially depressing to see other African/black people buy in to the rubbish being fed to them without realizing that as long as they blindly support this political party they will see no tangible or progressive changes in their/our communities’ living conditions.

Bill Clinton is a man who, while president, endorsed a number of actions that dramatically impacted the African/black community, in negative ways. He expanded the building of prisons far beyond that of the socially evil Ronald Reagan. Clinton made sure that black and brown communities were heavily policed and remained within a perpetual police state via his “tough on crime” polices. And Clinton, like his chum Barack Obama, used military force to attack Africa, not only in Somalia but also in Sudan when he bombed a vital pharmaceutical plant. Bill Clinton is only a mythological friend to African/black people where he exists within the minds of those who are hopelessly obsequious to their Democratic Party puppeteers. Bill Clinton is a man filled with a laundry list of evil deeds that he voluntarily committed, such as executing a mentally challenged African/black man while he was governor of Arkansas. When you see scores of African/black people cheering Clinton on, as if they are at a sporting event, you must then realize that you dwell within a society that considers talk of eviscerating white supremacy and institutional racism as somehow “radical”. Clinton and Obama have convinced people of color that they give a damn about them, despite the fact that many of their actual policies are antithetical to their wishful thinking.

America is like a manufactured zoo habitat, created by white supremacist Euro-Americans, capitalist elites, and imperialist war mongers (to name a few of the menagerie of the wretched). I understand the previous statement may seem a bit redundant but those descriptors are necessary if for nothing else to serve as accurate reminders of the illusionary society that some of us have forgotten we live in. The American habitat is replete with distractions methodically positioned to, not only control the peoples thinking, but also to maintain a status quo that is deleterious for the entire planet. Among these distractions is the baseless rhetoric spewing from the mouths of white liberals and conservatives, as well as from black operatives like Michael Eric Dyson and Al Sharpton. Dyson and Sharpton work for the interests of the white liberals that write their checks. You can rest assured that if the likes of these two characters were working in the interests of people of color, or real progressive change, they would not be paraded across TV airwaves controlled by corporate media like MSNBC (Comcast/General Electric). Black commentators like them are paid rather well to euphemize, down play and flat out not mention specific issues impacting Black/African America. Malcolm X had a term for individuals like these—-”House Negros“.  Their job is not only to keep black/African people from thinking comprehensively about certain issues; it is to help funnel people of color in to Democratic Party’s traps. All these roads (traps) lead to the status quo. Ideas and plans that would lead people of color towards necessary collective organization geared at social justice, equality, and liberation, are deemed “radical” and are, therefore, to be “feared”.

Socially progressive  ideas and actions are needed to rearrange this society in to one that facilitates justice, equality, and peace. As this moment in time (2012) America continues to reign as one of the most unequal and socially unjust societies on earth. America does not only confine its injustices within its own stolen and manufactured borders, the US exports terror, injustice, and plunder. These words are only deemed “radical” or “a shock” to those who have, unfortunately, spent their entire lives within the illusionary house built for them by the state. This is the only housing the US government is willing to socialize. A government that voluntarily places itself within a constant state of war should be been deemed radically nefarious.

Sane and humane societies reject war and global plunder, however most Americans seem to embrace, or at the very least, accept it. They reside in the smallest of “worlds”. Americans have allowed themselves to accept whatever poisonous narrative is mentally fed to them by their butcher-like government. Many Americans have bought in to the idea that there are “humanitarian wars” and that “their” government engages in these mythological wars. And those are the wars that the easily fooled support. Facts and innocent lives lost, from other countries, matter little. The name of the game throughout American society is superficiality, which is why the political candidates that spend the most money usually win the elections. Americans are generally not interested in studying the fine print that comes on the labeling of their favorite candidates. Like toddlers, many American voters are attracted whatever “shiny” trinkets that are presented to them each election cycle.

Barack Obama was one of those new “shiny trinkets” that masses of Americans gobbled up without any regard to what they were politically devouring. Within their politically manufactured world, they were doing something of social significance—-they were “change agents”, just like the man they hoped to elect in 2008—Barack Obama. It really didn’t matter what he said or how voted while in senate. His support of things like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and expanding America’s imperialist war in Afghanistan was not even an afterthought. They conveniently forgot the fact that they opposed those types of draconian and anti-democratic policies during the criminal Bush/Cheney reign of terror. And now that Barack Obama is president, a war-mongering president, these faithful Democratic Party cheerleaders have decided to make excuses for their president’s reprehensible policies and actions. Obama starts a war with a North African nation (Libya), under false pretenses, and they say—”he had to do it”. He orchestrates more drone attacks than George Bush could have ever wished for and Obama’s supporters defend his monstrous actions without pause. Obama supporters have even found ways to create excuses for his deceptive signing of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) —something that makes the Patriot Act pale in comparison. Obama signs anti-worker Free Trade Agreements and deports more than one million people—once again—”he had to do it!”

Within a virtual world created by white liberals and conservatives, alike, “leaders” like Barack Obama are seen as “progressive”. Their actions, no matter how despicable and destructive, are not only tolerated, they are embraced. And within this same world black political operative snake-oil salesmen/women like Michael Eric Dyson, Melissa Harris-Perry and Al Sharpton, are anointed “black leaders” and “progressive”. However those who reject the “American way” status quo, as well as the rhetoric and policies of the aforementioned—they are labeled as “radical” or “anti-American”. If opposing imperialist wars, white supremacy, capitalism, institutional racism, and all forms of injustice, make one “anti-American”, you may include this author within that rubric. If America were a more humane society, truly centered on equality, justice, and peace, these actions would never be seen as “radical”—they would be the norm. Those who truly want to make this world a better place have their work cut out for them—nonetheless the work must be done—humanity depends on it.

America may be a country with an abundance of social potential; however it continues to fail miserably at achieving that potential, if it is even trying at all. Many Americans, due to government-sponsored social engineering only see the world they are allowed to see. They don’t see the brilliant lessons to be learned outside of America’s manufactured borders and they certainly don’t see the beautiful society (and world) they, and future generations, could dwell in. It is imperative that those of us who see these things continue to speak out as loudly as we possibly can. We need to continue to organize as hard and diligently as we can. We must never accept injustice in any form, no matter what the person looks like that is delivering it. Reject the “boxes” the corporate political parties try to place us within. Create open spaces free of walls and inhumane restrictions. We need to reorganize and create a new, more socially just, society—one where the term “radical” is applied to those who support wars, imperialism, institutional racism, sexism, white supremacy, plunder and injustice (in general). Those are the social regressive radicals. We all need to do work that is meaningful and conducive of being labeled (not by ourselves but by others) as socially progressive “radicals”. However, hopefully, one day actions of today deemed “socially progressive” and “radical”, will be considered the norm.

The Democratic Illusion

By: Solomon Comissiong

The illusion of democracy within the illegitimate borders of America continues to psychologically obfuscate masses of US citizens. Just as people who are strung out on opiates begin to hallucinate imaging a “reality” that simply does not exist, so too are most Americans as they continue believing that their country is some sort of utopian democracy. Many Americans believe that their country is the gold standard when it comes to democracy. They believe that in their day-to-day lives they are making well informed decisions, from politics-to-entertainment-to-education, predicated on a robust platter of options. Unfortunately, they could not be further from the truth.

Webster’s dictionary defines democracy as: “government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.” It also lists democracy as, “political or social equality; democratic spirit.” Those definitions, regarding democracy, reside only within the seedy elitist hamlets scattered throughout America. For it is the disproportionately wealthy (the one percent that control more wealth than the bottom 90 percent) that have redefined the term “democracy”. The United States is much more of a Plutocracy (a government or state in which the wealthy class rules) than it is a democracy. The wealthy (upper class) consistently make decisions on behalf of the lower classes (middle, lower, and working). Because the wealthy are economically rich it is they who ultimately control every power generating mainstream institution within America (media, education, and politics). Unfettered control of these institutions allows the wealthy ruling class to inculcate their amoral ideals and interests to the disengaged masses. Their interests are, as they have been since the unscrupulous and unequal founding of America, to maintain control. The so-called founding fathers very much wanted to keep control of America in the hands of people like themselves—rich white men. An engaged and politically educated populous would represent a formidable threat to their power structure within any legitimately democratic society. Unfortunately for us, we don’t have such a society in the US. The media, healthcare, politics and education are all controlled, more or less; by the same elitist class that, by and large, controls America.

Legitimate democracies do not methodically omit and marginalize large pockets of information simply as a means toward the mass programming its populous. Despite the hollow promulgations by corporate backed government officials, that America is the world’s greatest democracy, it is not. Control over institutions where most Americans receive their information (schools and the media) has allowed these capitalist minions to manufacture a most perfect illusion of democracy. The US government, corporate media, and myriad educational institutions are in the business of false propaganda; and they do it ever so well. Without false propaganda and the strict control over the flow of information, and the mediums that carry it, they would not be able to systematically convince most Americans to faithfully follow their one-sided agenda. From cradle to grave Americans are taught to obey their government as well as to question very little about its actions, no matter how deleterious they may be. This is how and why many Americans seldom stand on the side of justice when their government is illegally occupying other countries, inciting imperialist wars, or supporting oppressive nations. They are told, day in and day out, that their government’s actions are ultimately making them safer. Yes, the US government also uses fear to effectively mass control its population.

When innocent civilians are destroyed is it not called murder or state sponsored terror; it is simply collateral damage and a means to a justified end. Iraqi or Afghani lives are not thought of as being equal to that of American lives, their lives are considered expendable. This mentality is irrefutably xenophobic in nature and supported in everything from civic courses to the halls of congress. Meanwhile the corporate media hides the fact that over 1.3 million Iraqi civilians (www.justforeignpolicy.org/iraq) have perished as a result of the US occupation and scores of Afghanis have been slaughtered by the indiscriminate actions of US drone attacks. They also will not discuss the hundreds of thousands of children who have lost their lives by way of brutal US sanctions in countries like Iraq and Zimbabwe.

Americans have been desensitized from understanding, caring about or fully grasping the ramifications of their government’s foreign policies. Like an overprotective parent, they have been sheltered. However this parent (the US government) cares much more about its contrived reputation than it does the overall and long term well being of its obedient children (US citizens). Americans have been taught and told who their enemies should be and who they should support as allies. Much like the white children of racist parents, they are taught who to love and who to hate. These justifications are often as limited as the purveyors of those same destructive ideologies.  They are taught to hate countries like Cuba because they are allegedly run by so-called dictators and that they are somehow a threat to the American way of life. Most Americans imbibe this psychologically limiting cocktail without ever examining the historical and factual context. If they did they would discover that those countries are often hated by the US government simply because they had to audacity to liberate themselves from white colonization and to reject capitalism. The American government never gave a damn about the masses of Cuban people who were oppressed and destroyed by the government of Fulgencio Batista. The US government loved him because he allowed the US to have unfettered reign over much of Cuba’s resources. The Cuban Revolution put an end to all of that and ushered in socialism, thus putting an end to US monopolization of Cuba’s natural resources. This is a significant reason why the US, to this day, programs its citizens to mindlessly hate Cuba. The great irony is that America was stolen by white “settlers” who were trying to escape an oppressive government and system within England. However, the America democratic illusion even prevents this irony from ever surfacing.

A legitimate gold standard for democracy facilitates an atmosphere in which a wide array of thoughts, perspectives, and historical accounts publically surface. Alternative thoughts, perspectives and historical accounts are routinely suppressed everyday within America. Freedom of choice is supposed to be something that runs freely and openly within the body of any legitimate democracy. However, within the US, even cultural art forms are suppressed. Many American youth into Hip Hop have a limited understanding of rap music, without evening knowing that their comprehension of that musical genre has been methodically limited. Their favorite rappers are not really their favorite rappers; they are simply the ones that the corporate media finds acceptable enough to play and to therefore popularize. Artists and songs that encourage audiences to think outside of their governmentally manufactured “boxes” are systematically prevented from ever becoming as popular as their mind numbing corporate backed alternative. Racially stereotypical and socially regressive rap music is eagerly supported by the corporate media (radio, TV, and record labels). Can they really be one’s favorite rappers if the selection from which to choose has been carefully and cautiously predetermined?

In the same fashion that rap music is popularized within the US so too are the political parties and candidates that the vast majority of Americans routinely support. In 2010 it is by no accident that American politics are controlled by two corporate financed political parties. Both parties (Democrats and Republicans) are heavily financed and supported by the capitalist elite whether they may be on Wall Street, Silicone Valley, or within the Healthcare and Military industries. Even the corporate media outlets which are mistakenly thought to be the medium that informs and educates the US masses are frolicking around in bed with mainstream politicians. They are the tail that wags the dog, the elephant and the jackass. However, it is often hard to distinguish who is wagging who since the corporate world is much bigger than the actual government. They clearly control the politicians’ actions far more than people who they were elected to serve.

The Democratic and Republican parties are systematically beholden to the corporations that supplement their incomes as well as finance their campaigns. Sadly, most Americans have been duped into believing their votes actually matter or that they are voting for candidates that best represent their interests. This is often not the case. Routinely, as in the 2008 presidential election, alternative party candidates are structurally kept from equally participating in elections. Green Party nominee (www.gp.org), Cynthia McKinney (http://mothball.runcynthiarun.org/node), was not permitted to participate in any of the nationally televised presidential debates. Tens of millions of eligible voters were not “democratically” given the opportunity to even hear her platform, ideas, or perspectives, despite the fact that she won her party’s nomination.

The Commission on Presidential Debates (www.debates.org) mission, as stated on their website, is: “…to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. Its primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates.” As stated in their mission they “produce” debates and “provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners”.

In other words they manufacture debates as well as provide the best possible batch of “acceptable” information to potential voters. They understand that there is very little difference between most Democratic and Republican candidates therefore if they limit alternative parties and their nominees; they significantly limit most Americans from even imagining a better political structure. Alternative candidates, like McKinney, represent a bold potential threat to their sheepish voting blocks. Even though the Commission on Presidential Debates claims they are a non-partisan non-profit organization, they are supremely influenced by both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as the corporate media that televises the debates. The Commission on Presidential Debates is controlled, operated, and sponsored by a wide array of big businesses, former Democratic and Republican politicians, as well as vastly wealthy individuals. Grassroots organizations and working class citizens are clearly not welcome to participate, unless they support the mainstream agenda. This “commission” is simply part of the larger system that continually limits the range in which Americans could be engaged politically. This system does and cannot support alternative views to the manufactured mainstream corporate financed political structure in America.

America’s version of “democracy” continues to be one of the most perfect illusions created by man. Americans are born into a system that is driven by exploitation and greed, by any means necessary. The system robs, destroys, and plunders, all in the name of “democracy” and its citizens. Because most Americans were mentally cultivated by this limited and illusionary form of democracy, they support it with blind faith, regardless of the fact that it significantly hurts their quality of life. Ironically their government’s relationship and loyalty to the corporate world (sounds like fascism to me) is a significant reason why they (the American working class) continue to trudge along in a quagmire of unfulfilled potential. Political fornication between Capitol Hill and the corporate world have prevented millions of Americans from having everything from a single payer healthcare system to heightened access to a college “education” to a world class public school system. Unfortunately, none of the above exists within America. However, most Americans strongly believe that the US is a beacon for freedom, justice, and equality and, yes, even democracy. They are protected by the painless bliss of ignorance that looms large within the mythological world that has been created for them by their own government. It is one thing to not know and it is another to not know what you don’t know. Most Americans truly have no idea as to how many decisions they think they are making for themselves have in fact already been made for them.

Most public schools are filled with history and social studies courses laden with misinformation training American youth to start thinking a certain way about themselves and the world they live in. That “certain way” often consists of a narrowly framed perspective thus limiting most Americans from becoming good world citizens. Americans are taught to worship and glorify murderers, war mongers, and racists. Americans are not supposed to critically think about how their government uses its military within the dangerous parameters of aggression. They are not supposed to be able to connect the dots between the fact that more than 40 percent of their tax dollars are spent for military purposes yet never wondering why thy may never have universal healthcare. They are ultimately well trained to unconditionally support manufactured systems that abrogate their own freedoms and civil liberties. As was said in the cult classic, The Usual Suspects, “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”Not knowing how they are systematically repressed prevents a great many Americans from demanding a truly radical and tangible change in this system to something that places human needs first and the quest for capital last. Until a well mobilized and organized social revolution of poor and working class people successfully fruits, Americans, by and large, will continue to aimlessly wander about within the illusionary land of democracy—America.

Euro-American Songs of Racism, War and White Supremacy: An African Perspective

Euro-American Songs of Racism, War and White Supremacy: An African Perspective

by Solomon Comissiong

America has never been the ‘Sweet land of liberty”; as a matter of fact it has been the complete opposite.”

Life within the American Empire is replete with stark reminders of a land built on a foundation of injustice, but only if you remain cognizant of your surroundings. This author is often reminded that you do not have to love or like something in order to hold great deference for it. Take for instance the most awesome structure and effectiveness of America’s all-encompassing indoctrination system. Let me preface, I hold not love for this system – as a matter of fact I despise it. I loathe it. Did I mention that I find it reprehensible? Ok – I think you get the point. However, despite my feelings for this most nefarious system of mind manipulation, I respect its potency. My respect for America’s propaganda machine is akin to the kind of respect a gazelle must have for a lion or seal must have for a polar bear. If they don’t respect their predators they are certain to be eaten. And if we don’t respect America’s propaganda beast it will certainly consume our minds, and therefore our humanity. When facing a formidable foe, one must respect that opponent – if you don’t, you can be in for an unfavorable surprise.

The United States propaganda machine never lets up and always operates on full throttle. Its conductors understand, all too well, that this psychological device is a necessity. Without American false propaganda and indoctrination their despicable deeds lose much of their overall life. Oppression, white supremacy, institutional racism, war, imperialism and injustice are all, part and parcel, made possible by way of indoctrination and false propaganda. These tools are so effective that they even convince many of America’s most oppressed to openly cheerlead for its crimes. Unwittingly, they have been made accomplices without fully realizing it. It is sad to witness countless American-born Africans openly make excuses for US imperialism and war, simply because the current face of the war machine is that of a brown skinned man named Barack Obama.

These tools are so effective that they even convince many of America’s most oppressed to openly cheerlead for its crimes.”

People of color, like their Euro-American counterparts have been bombarded with the same incessant supply of false propaganda-laced psychological darts. They are surrounded with carefully placed one-sided propaganda extolling the contrived virtues of a rogue empire. It is on the “news,” movies, TV, ahistorical school textbooks, and even within seemingly “harmless” ballads. My Country Tis of Thee is a song, like numerous pro-American ballads, a cute melody laced with untruth after white supremacist untruth. My Country Tis of Thee was written by Samuel Francis Smith in 1831 and was first performed in public on July 4th of that same year for an Independence Day celebration. This was fitting given the hypocritical roots of the American Independence Day holiday – why not sing hypocritical propagandistic songs too.  This song was even used as a de facto National Anthem prior to the adoption of the “Star Spangled Banner” in 1931. And yes, the “Star Spangled Banner” is a most hypocritical song as well.

My Country Tis of Thee is stuffed with a psychological and social hallucinogenic that renders the unknowing into a sort of blind patriotic trance. At this juncture only strong doses of factual information and infusions of reasoning can bring the subject back to reality. Unfortunately, many older victims of this kind of indoctrination are too fargone to be reasoned with, even with the factual antidote. Despite being riddled with propagandistic falsehoods, songs like “My Country Tis of Thee” are most effective in transforming subjects in to helplessly patriotic sheep.

Songs like “My Country Tis of Thee” deserve critical analysis, if for no other reason than to expose their harmful composition to the unknowing. The villagers must be warned! Let’s look at the first verse of this curious song:

My country, ’tis of thee,

Sweet land of liberty,

Of thee I sing;

Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims’ pride,

From ev’ry mountainside

Let freedom ring!

This verse is riddled with white supremacist lie after white supremacist lie. America has never been the “Sweet land of liberty,” as a matter of fact it has been the complete opposite. America’s amoral foundation is drenched in the blood of countless people of color who were massacred in order for Europeans to build it into the white settler state that it is even to this day. In 2012 America reigns as one of the most racist and unjust nations on planet Earth. Unfortunately, while many people know this fact outside of America’s manufactured borders, most Americans are oblivious to this painful truth. This is a stark reminder of the effectiveness of this country’s false propaganda machine and American Exceptionalism myth.

Barack Obama has become a contemporary Buffalo Solider.”

Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride”? This song clearly was written by white people for white people. They aren’t talking about the fathers of indigenous children whose entire families were slain in the most barbaric ways imaginable. And they certainly are not referring to the countless enslaved Africans who were worked, raped and beaten to death. Stereotypes about indigenous people being savages were created by European barbarians to, not only mask their sadistic crimes, but to also justify hundreds of more years of maiming, mutilating and massacring. The only savages were the Europeans who committed these crimes against humanity. These “people” did things that four-legged animals refrain from. Hundreds of years later, American politicians, like Hilary Clinton, have continued the savagery set forth by some of her ancestors. Enrolling a brown face to spearhead these modern day crimes via war and imperialism was a genius move. It has mollified the masses of people of color who used to stand on the side of justice – now they revel in war and make excuses for today’s crimes against humanity. Barack Obama has become a contemporary Buffalo Solider. Instead of slaying indigenous people throughout the Midwestern plains, he slaughters Africans in Libya – all for his political masters.

My country tis of thee”? Really? This land is no more white people’s than a stolen car belongs to the thief. America may be a white settler state, however it remains stolen land. It will always be the land of indigenous peoples. However the Euro-American hubris is unbelievable. Claiming that this land is your land (after brutally ripping it away from indigenous people) takes more than audacity, it takes an evil heart. This leads me to the second verse of this vile white supremacist song:

My native country, thee,

Land of the noble free,

Thy name I love;

I love thy rocks and rills,

Thy woods and templed hills;

My heart with rapture thrills,

Like that above.

My native country, thee,”? Again, we are confronted with the blatant lie referring to this land as their, “native country”. However, they knew what they were doing. Rule number one of false propaganda – the more you repeat and display lies, odds are, the simple-minded will believe them. No need for special glasses as worn by Rowdy Piper in the 1988 science fiction flick, “They Live,” as a means of discerning who is what and what is who – simply look around America and you will see those who are byproducts of this white supremacist false propaganda machine. They are literally everywhere. Songs like “My country tis of thee,” as repugnant as they are, are incredibly effective in fomenting very dangerous white nationalist sentiments. They are not simply “patriot,” they are ahistorical, as well as justifications for the mass murder of indigenous people throughout North America.

Land of the noble free”? Once again we can easily assume this line is in reference to European “settlers” since people of color were not free at all at the time this song was written. In fact, people of color, whether it was enslaved Africans or North America’s indigenous population, were in the midst being routinely mass murdered by European invaders, including by the likes of many of America’s so-called “Founding Fathers.” What makes the line, “Land of the noble free” particularly reprehensible is the equation of the word “noble” with those who were “free.”  Given the European settlers’ evil actions toward people of color, any morally sound human should naturally equate their activities as devilish crimes against humanity.

Who were they really praying to – perhaps they devil itself?”

I simply will offer up one more verse within the wretched white supremacist incantation, “Our country tis of thee,” as evidence of one of the countless weapons of indoctrination, utilized by the morally corrupt, as means to indoctrinate and dehumanize young children. There are more verses within this song, however in the interest of sanity I will end on the following verse:

Our fathers’ God to Thee,

Author of liberty,

To Thee we sing.

Long may our land be bright,

With freedom’s holy light,

Protect us by Thy might,

Great God our King.

The above verse is pretty self-explanatory, as well as sick and twisted. These cretins do their best to emphasize their desire to use their “God” as Divine justification for their amoral actions. However, this is nothing new. European invaders, commonly referred to as Pilgrims or Settlers, routinely justified their devilish crimes as Divine intervention or that they were destined by the Lord to “inherit” the land they ripped away from the indigenous nations of Turtle Island (North America). The blood-drenched establishment of the Thanksgiving Day holiday is largely based on the raping, murdering, and maiming of indigenous people (e.g., Wampanoag, Pequots) throughout what is now known as “New England.” What kind of “God” would support these kinds of actions?  Who were they really praying to – perhaps they devil itself? This author cannot image there being any good “God” that would condone such horrific deeds.

My country tis of thee” is simply one of a great many songs of indoctrination used to render subjects mentally numb to the hypocrisies and injustices riddled throughout America’s tainted history. America’s own national anthem is among that collection of ballads. Individuals are to collectively (much like at a cult ceremony) sing along in cacophony. Within the American Empire you are trained at an early age not to question the validity of the song – just accept it like bad medicine. Over time these songs play a significant role within the subconscious of many Americans. As their government bombs and destroys people from other nations, their subconscious tells them that the carnage is justified. This keeps them collectively in check, never jointly (on massive and consistent scales) demanding an end to America’s perpetual addiction to war; thus the false propaganda machine remains a most effective tool. However, one of the sadistic realities within this gruesome tale remains the fact that children (of all backgrounds) are force fed this morally deficient psychological food.

Having Euro-American children sing songs like “My country tis of thee,” is the systematic training of white children to embrace America’s bloody legacy of white supremacy and institutional racism. These children are not given a chance to break the cycle of injustices committed by Euro-Americans upon people of color. The ultimate intent of having white children mindlessly recite these songs is to continue the legacy of white supremacy, unabated. What other reason could there be?

Within the American Empire you are trained at an early age not to question the validity of the song – just accept it like bad medicine.”

And by having children of color subjected to, not only songs like “My country tis of thee,” but also revisionist history within the American school system, ensures that many of these children will grow up to as mindless cheerleaders for wars committed against other nations – most being nations of people of color. These adults of color have had their minds bombarded with images and propaganda their entire lives, and with little to no intervention along the way the sad transformation is complete. Voila, you are now a good loyal Yankee! No doubt the American born Africans on the 2012 USA men’s Olympic basketball team were subjected to this regimen their entire lives. This was blatantly evident when, upon beating Spain for the gold medal, they, without hesitation, took the American flags handed to them and wrapped themselves within them as if it was their silk comforter on a chilly night. They even chanted, “USA, USA, USA.” Eerily, it was if they were programmed to do just that. I guess systematic indoctrination is a form of mental programming.

Children should be given a chance at humanity – a chance to contribute toward creating a much better planet than the one they inherited. However, as long as white youth within the US Empire are subjected to white supremacist songs, and daily incantations riddled with justifications for imperialist deeds, they will contribute to the same crimes as their forefathers. And children of color will contribute to or support similar crimes that were committed against their ancestors. These rituals do not push them to demand more from a government that falsely claims to represent them, the rituals program them to accept the destructive status quo. In 2012 the status quo in America is largely based on institutional racism, sexism, imperialism, and profit before people. The Euro-America capitalist system is one that produced a prison for profit mass incarceration system. And it is one that produced the war for profit Military Industry Complex machine. No money for a universal healthcare system that would save tens of thousands of lives a year, however there is always enough money to mass incarcerate the poor and to wage war on countries with resources they wish to plunder.

Wars of aggression and global domination are not unlike waging war against Wampanoag people. And incarcerating masses of people of color (for profit) is not dissimilar to chattel slavery in the US. These things are going on today, as they were hundreds of years ago – the scene of the crime is just exponentially bigger and the tactics have become more subtle, yet more effective. In order to stop these crime stories from continuing, a new chapter must be written. However, this cannot happen if children’s’ minds are ultimately poisoned with destructive propaganda. Those of us who are adults in the know must share this information with other adults. Most importantly, we must have the courage to candidly share it with, not just our children, but our neighbor’s children. If we are a village then we all take responsibility for the creation of a new and better society. However, it cannot be done without consistent work. We must be the inconvenient heroes at our school board and PTA meetings, and raise these concerns. And then we must demand (not request) a change in the repugnant and racist current system.

The rituals program them to accept the destructive status quo.”

Comprehensive and accurate history must be reflected in school curricula, and songs like “My country tis of thee” must be eradicated from schools. The racist changes within history books and courses in places like Texas and Arizona are merely the legalization of white supremacist values that have been in force for generations. Together we must reclaim our children’s education, several communities at a time. Organization and institution building is paramount. There simply is no other way. If we don’t collectively fight to make these changes injustice will continue, in perpetuity. A better world starts with us, and it starts with social justice in the United States. Children throughout the globe simply deserve better.

If it were up to Africans/blacks who are not mentally programmed by Euro-American indoctrination, they might chose the rap group Gang Starr’s classic song “Conspiracy” as a more accurate depiction of the US, from an African perspective.

Part of the song goes like this:

“You can’t tell me life was meant to be like this
a black man in a world dominated by whiteness
Ever since the declaration of independence
we’ve been easily brainwashed by just one sentence
It goes: all men are created equal
that’s why corrupt governments kill innocent people…
…The educational system presumes you to fail

the next place is the corner then after that jail
You’ve got to understand that this has all been conspired
to put a strain on our brains so that the strong grow tired
It even exists when you go to your church
cuz up on the wall a white Jesus lurks…

…They use your subconscious to control your will
they’ve done it for a while and developed the skill
to make you want to kill your own brother man
black against black you see it’s part of their plan
They want to send us to war and they want to ban rap
what they really want to do is get rid of us blacks
Genocide is for real and I hope that you’re hearing me
you must be aware to combat the conspiracy…”
